On his birthday a boy receives a set of tin soldiers, the last soldier has one leg only. During night, when all toys come alive, the soldier falls in love with the paper ballerina who also stands on one leg. The troll, who is also in love with her, makes sure that the tin soldier is tossed out of the window. Outside the soldier endures many dangers and at last he is eaten by a fish. The fish is caught by a fisherman and sold at the market to the boys mother, so the soldier returns to the house. Unfortunately the boy throws the soldier into the fire place where he starts to burn. A wind sweeps the ballerina into the fireplace too, and a beautiful tin heart is the only remains of the two lovers.
