Little Claus is smart but poor and Big Claus is rich and dumb. Little Claus has to borrow Big Claus’s horses to grow crops on his field. One day Big Claus kills Little Claus’s horse, Little Claus is devastated. Little Claus manages to sell the hide from the horse for a lot of money. Big Claus kills his 4 horses to earn the same amount of money. This does not work and he tries to kill Little Claus by throwing him into the river in a sack. Little Claus escapes the sack and returns to the village with both cows and more money. Big Claus wants to know how Little Claus got the cows, and he ends up jumping into the river in a sack with a stone, to meet the riverpeople who Little Claus said had helped him. Big Claus ends up dead and Little Claus can live in peace.
