The Emperor of China hears that the nightingale is the loveliest thing in his kingdom. With the help from poor people the nightingale is brought to court, where it sings for the Emperor everyday. One day, he is given a mechanical nightingale from Japan. Everyone declares the artificial bird to be superior, and the real nightingale flies away. Much later the mechanical bird breaks down and is beyond repair. The Emperor is close to death as he cannot live without the song from the nightingale. Luckily the real nightingale comes back to sing for the dying man. He immediately recovers and the nightingale comes back to sing to him from time to time.
